Sharing Your Story Effectively

People connect with stories. Jesus often used parables—short, relatable stories—to teach profound truths. In the same way, your personal testimony is a powerful tool for sharing the gospel.

It’s not just about what you believe, but how Jesus has changed your life.

Revelation 12:11 says:

“And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.”

Your testimony isn’t just a personal story—it’s evidence of God’s transforming power.

How to Structure Your Testimony

A clear and compelling testimony usually follows a three-part structure:

1. Before Jesus: What Was Your Life Like?

Describe your life before knowing Christ. What struggles, doubts, or emptiness did you experience? What were you searching for?

Example:
"I grew up believing that my value depended on my success. No matter how much I achieved, I still felt like something was missing."

2. Encountering Jesus: How Did You Come to Faith?

Share what led you to put your trust in Jesus. Was there a moment, a process, a conversation, or a scripture that changed everything?

Example:
"A friend invited me to church, and I heard about grace for the first time. I realised I didn’t have to earn God’s love—it was already given through Jesus."

3. After Jesus: How Has Your Life Changed?

Explain how knowing Jesus has impacted your life. What difference has He made?

Example:
"Now, I no longer find my identity in success. I know I’m loved by God, and that has given me real peace."

Tips for Sharing Your Testimony Well

1. Keep It Short and Focused

Aim for no longer than 2-3 minutes. A long, complicated story can lose impact.

2. Avoid Christian Jargon

Phrases like "washed in the blood" or "born again" might confuse non-Christians. Use clear, everyday language.

3. Be Honest and Relatable

You don’t have to make your testimony dramatic—authenticity is more powerful than exaggeration.

4. Connect It to the Gospel

Your testimony should highlight God’s grace, not just self-improvement. Make sure people see Jesus as the hero of your story.

5. Adapt to Your Audience

If you're speaking with a sceptic, emphasise the intellectual journey. If you're talking to someone struggling with purpose, highlight how Jesus gave you meaning.

Practical Exercises

1. Write Out Your Testimony

  • Summarise your story in under 300 words.
  • Make sure each section (Before, Encounter, After) is clear.

2. Practice Sharing It

  • Share your testimony with a Christian friend and ask for feedback.
  • Time yourself to keep it concise.

3. Ask Others About Their Stories

  • Start conversations by asking: “Have you ever had a significant spiritual experience?”
  • Listen well—this can open doors to sharing your story.
