Growing as a Disciple
"You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit"
(John 15:16)
Discipleship is not an option. Jesus says that if anyone would come after me, he must follow me
- Tim Keller
When we use the word "disciple", we mean learners who are learning to follow Jesus in every aspect of our lives. We are committed to knowing and growing in Christ, and cultivating habits that facilitate that.
Disciples;
- Give God time daily
- Exercise faith
- Commit to grow
Give God time daily
Spending time in the presence of God is one of the great joys of the Christian life. But what does that look like in practice?
There's no one way to answer that (and the Bible says literally nothing about having a daily "quiet time"!) but, as we read scripture and learn from other believers throughout history, we see that there are some common practices (sometimes called "spiritual disciplines") that will, if practiced daily, help you grow in your relationship with God.
Habits to cultivate;
Perhaps the most important thing is that you cultivate healthy devotional rhythms, and look after your spiritual, emotional, and physical health.
Exercise faith
From Genesis to Revelation, the Christian experience is described using words like "believe", "trust", "rely upon", and "act upon". Without faith, it is impossible to please God and it’s clear that above all, God desires active faith in his people.
Habits to cultivate;
Commit to grow
The expectation of scripture is that Christians grow. 2 Peter 3:18 tells us to "...grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ". But this is not a heavy command, rather it is an invitation. An invitation to know God more, and become more like Christ.
