What is Baptism?

Baptism is a simple but powerful step in the life of a Christian. It is a public way of saying, “I am choosing to follow Jesus.”
In the New Testament, people were baptised after they responded personally to the good news about Jesus. Baptism does not make someone a Christian. Instead, it is a visible sign of the new life God has already begun in them.
When someone is baptised in water, it symbolises being united with Jesus in his death and resurrection. Going under the water represents leaving behind an old way of life; coming up out of the water represents the beginning of a new life with him.
Jesus himself was baptised, and he told his followers to baptise those who chose to follow him. From the very beginning of the church, baptism has been an important step for believers.
At New Community, we baptise people by full immersion in water because this reflects the pattern we see in the New Testament and the meaning baptism carries.
If you are exploring the Christian faith, baptism is not something expected straight away. It is a step people take once they have decided to follow Jesus.
If you would like to find out more about baptism or are thinking about being baptised yourself, we would love to talk with you.
Why not email office@newcom.church and start the conversation about why, when and how!
And in the meantime, check out the video of some of our baptisms.
