About Us

Beliefs & Values

Everything we do flows from what we believe. Our theological foundations shape our daily lives, rhythms, and practices as a church family, and guide how we follow Jesus together. We love exploring the what and why of our beliefs, so if you have any questions, please get in touch.

What we believe

Our theological foundations

As part of the universal church, we stand within the historic Christian faith.

01

We affirm the ecumenical creeds of the Church, including the Apostles’, Nicene-Constantinopolitan, Chalcedonian, and Athanasian Creeds.

02

As contemporary evangelicals, we are members of the Evangelical Alliance and affirm both its statement of faith and the Lausanne Covenant.

03

As part of the New Ground family of churches and within the wider Newfrontiers movement, we affirm justification by faith alone and stand in the tradition of Reformational confessional documents such as the Heidelberg Catechism. We also hold charismatic convictions and seek the ongoing work and gifts of the Holy Spirit in the life of the church today.

Our Core Values

Our beliefs shape how we live together as a church.

Word-based

The Bible sits at the centre of our life together, shaping our teaching, practices, and direction.

02
Grace-filled

The gospel of grace is at the heart of everything we do. We believe transformation flows from grace, not performance, and that the gospel continues to shape every part of the Christian life.

03
Spirit-empowered

We depend on the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit, who fills and equips believers with power and gifts for service and mission today.

We believe Jesus leads his church through servant-hearted leadership. New Community is led by a team of elders and leaders who shepherd, guard, and guide the church together.

We believe God gives a variety of gifts to build the church and equip all believers for ministry.

We believe the local church is central to God’s mission, and that mission is lived out locally, globally, and holistically.

Questions people often ask

If you have a question that's not answered here feel free to get in touch.

What do you believe about baptism and communion?

We believe baptism is for those who have repented of their sin and put their trust in Jesus Christ, and that it is a public declaration of new life in him. We practise baptism in water by full immersion, following the pattern we see in the New Testament.

Communion is a regular practice where we remember Jesus’ death and resurrection, give thanks for his grace, and renew our faith together. We invite all who trust in Jesus to take part, regardless of church membership, as an expression of shared faith in Christ.

If you’d like to find out more about being baptised, you can do so here.

What do you believe about mission, evangelism, and justice?

We believe Jesus calls his church to make disciples of all nations. This includes sharing the good news of Jesus, forming people as disciples, and living out the gospel in ways that bring hope, healing, and restoration to the world.

Throughout Scripture, God shows particular concern for the poor, the vulnerable, and those on the margins, and calls his people to love mercy, pursue justice, and walk humbly with him. As followers of Jesus, we believe the gospel transforms both individuals and communities, shaping how we live, serve, and seek the good of others.

We hold together word and deed, proclaiming the good news of Jesus while demonstrating his love through compassion, service, and justice. Our approach is shaped by Scripture, reliant on the Holy Spirit, and rooted in grace.

How is the church led and accountable?

We are led by a team of elders who seek to shepherd the church faithfully under the authority of Scripture and in dependence on the Holy Spirit. They are responsible for the spiritual leadership, direction, and pastoral care of the church.

Alongside this, we recognise and encourage a range of leadership gifts within the church. Our staff team and wider leadership serve under the oversight of the elders, helping to equip the church, care for people, and support the life and mission of New Community.

We also have a team of trustees who oversee our legal, financial, and safeguarding responsibilities, ensuring we operate with integrity and in line with our charitable obligations and the requirements of the Charity Commission. Together, elders, staff and trustees work closely to provide accountability, good governance, and wise stewardship.

We value shared leadership, transparency, and partnership with other churches. We are part of the New Ground family of churches and the wider Newfrontiers movement, and we welcome apostolic input that helps strengthen, support, and equip the life and mission of the local church, while also providing encouragement and accountability to our leadership.

What does belonging or membership look like at New Community?

We believe the Christian life is meant to be lived in committed community, not in isolation. Throughout the New Testament, following Jesus is worked out through belonging to a local church, a people who worship together, care for one another, and share in God’s mission.

At New Community, belonging grows over time as people follow Jesus together. For those who want to make this church their home, membership is a way of expressing commitment to Christ, to one another, and to the shared life and mission of the church. We run a DNA course once a term for those wishing to explore what this looks like.

You can explore practical ways to get involved through joining a Connect Community, serving on a team, giving, and taking part in our Next Steps process.

How do you approach difficult or contested questions?

We seek to be a church shaped by Scripture, centred on Jesus, and guided by the Holy Spirit. On some issues, Christians across time and cultures have held different convictions, and we want to approach these conversations with both truth and grace.

We hold clear convictions shaped by Scripture and historic Christian orthodoxy, while also seeking to be a church where people are welcomed, listened to, and cared for. We believe following Jesus is a journey, and we’re committed to walking with people patiently and pastorally, even where there are real differences and questions.

Some of these topics are best explored in conversation rather than through brief answers, and we’re always happy to talk and listen.
